Semiahmoo Potters April 2025

Thank-you to everyone who attended our March 29th Mini Market studio sale. Semiahmoo Potters are now in full creative mode preparing for our annual Spring Sale, Saturday, May 3rd and Sunday, 4th at the South Surrey & Recreation Arts Centre’s Turnbull Gallery. One week before Mother’s Day, the sale will feature functional and decorative wheel thrown and hand-built ceramics. Besides spring and summer ware, a wide variety of whimsical pieces offer visitors unique gift options for Moms, teachers, weddings and home decor. As well, local potters interested in developing their skills can register for workshops at our sale. B.C. lower mainland clinicians Amelia Butcher, David Lloyd and Robin Jenkins will be at Crescent Park Studio this June, September and October. Check out the website “Classes” link for details.

We continue our last-Saturday-of-the-month Open Houses, welcoming the public to the 2585 132nd Street studio on the edge of Crescent Park. On April 26th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. visitors can explore our gallery and observe member Nicole A. sharing throwing large bowl skills with our potters. Additional parking adjacent to the studio will be provided if the  public parking lot is full. Look for our sign:

As part of our commitment to connect with the community, in April we’ll be working with a local Embers troupe. Potters will help the girls create and decorate pinch pots which we fire and clear glaze at our studio. It’s such fun to see their clay artistry and interest in ceramics evolve. We’re fortunate to have the CPS kilns available for outreach activities such as these, and many potters enjoy ‘connecting communities with clay’ volunteering their skills.

This month our members have two Raku firing opportunities. This ancient technique of rapid low firing outdoors and then reducing pots in fiery lidded barrels is magical yet unpredictable. The ware is not fired hot enough to vitrify so the pieces are not food safe. But they are beautiful and decorative; look for Raku pieces at our May Spring Sale. Our first SPS workshop for members will also take place this month; master potter David Lloyd will be demonstrating throwing big and tall pieces. Again, look for new “big and tall” SPS creations at our sale.

Enjoy a few snaps from some of our March classes introducing people to throwing on the wheel.

We are grateful for these many opportunities to fulfill our mandate “connecting communities with clay”. Thank you for your continued support and interest.
